What are the qualifications I must meet to be able to compete for one of the Royal Trio positions?
- Must be a female not less than 19 years of age and not more than 24 years of age by August 1, 2010.
- Must be a Canadian citizen.
- Must never have been married nor have had a child.
- Must agree not to marry during your reign.
- Must agree to reside within a 100 km radius of Stampede Park. Place of employment or educational institution must also meet this requirement.
- Must have received a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess a current, valid Alberta Drivers License and have full access to a vehicle.
- Must not have a criminal record and must consent to a security check.
- Must be willing to sign a commitment letter for one year.
- Competent riding ability is a necessity. Riding pre-requisite to be announced.
Can I attend University or work if I'm a successful candidate for the Royal Trio?
Many of our past trio have worked and attended a post secondary school during their reign. This does require an understanding employer or professors that will be accommodating on schedules. It also requires excellent time management skills.
How old do you have to be to become the Calgary Stampede Queen or Princess?
You must be 19 years of age on or before August 1, 2010.
What is the typical year like for a member of the royal trio?
The Queen and Princesses attend as many as 375 events throughout the year, although almost half of those are during Stampede itself. Many of our past royalty have worked or attended classes throughout their reign. This does however require an understanding employer or flexibility from instructors.
Travel typically involves a trip to the Grey Cup final and a couple of other possible overnight trips throughout the year. It is a very intensive year that has given incredible life experiences to all who have had the honour of participating.
Are there any costs incurred by participating in the competition?
There are no financial costs associated with running for Calgary Stampede Queen & Princess. There is however time commitments required during the competition, so you could say there is a cost of time involved. The calendar has more information on the competition schedule.
Do you need to be able to ride to enter the competition?
Competent riding ability is a pre-requisite to entering the competition. The pre-requisite will be announced shortly.
What happens if a contestant defaults on any of the judged events during the competition?
If a contestant for whatever reason defaults on any of the judged events during the competition; the contestant has 2 alternatives: 1. Withdraw from the competition completely OR 2. Take a zero score "O" for that event and continue on with the rest of the competition. Default is defined as; not attending, not able or unwilling.
